In-School Marine Programs For All Ages

The Program...
Ocean Adventure! aquarium has been offering fun and information on Maine's ocean and commercial fishing heritage for over twelve years. All programs are tailored to the age group involved and last about 1 hour each. They are designed to cover a number of the Learning Results Standards. We bring an in-depth knowledge of marine issues, factual information and a humorous approach along with the flexibility to fit into your daily schedule. The usual scenario in schools is five, 1-hour programs per day with 20-30 students per program.

Program outlines, vocabulary lists and in class activities are all sent in the weeks preceding the program. Supplementary video material is also available.

The Presenter...
Phil Averill, founder and owner of Ocean Adventure!, has been involved in marine environmental issues all his working life. Phil graduated from Bates College with a bachelor's degree in Biology and from the University of Delaware with a master's degree in Marine Studies. He has worked around Maine's commercial fishing industry all his life and has experience lobstering, scalloping, groundfishing, and shrimping. He was one of the first observers on foreign vessels under the 200 mile limit law of 1976, living aboard vessels from around the world for up to two months at a time. He has managed a lobsterman's co-op and spent over ten years as a fishing gear expert and extension agent for the State of Maine. He has given talks aboard cruise ships, at marine education conferences, to fishermen, and to the general public. He has given classes at Maine Maritime Academy, Bates, and Colby. He is also on the board of directors of the Gulf of Maine Marine Education Association, and started Ocean Adventure! in 1991.

"Phil Averill is the epitome of a great teacher: very knowledgeable with a great sense of humor."
