Vocabulary List for How the Oceans are Built from Ocean Adventure!

continent - one of the seven large land masses on earth

island - a piece of land, smaller than a continent, surrounded by water

mantle - the part of the earth between the outer crust and inner core

core - the metal ball in the center of the earth

crust - the light, hard outer covering of the earth

trench - a deep canyon or gash in the ocean floor

divergence - to move apart

convergence - to move toward each other

basalt - the hard, heavy rock the earth was originally made of and now makes up the ocean floor

granite - the hard, lighter rock making up most of the continental crust

density - how light or heavy something is compared to water

current - water moving continuously in the same direction, not unlike a river in the ocean

axis - the imaginary line around which the earth rotates

apogee - the farthest distance in an orbit from the center

perigee - the closest distance in an orbit from the center

revolve - to move around in an orbit like the earth around the sun

rotate - to spin around on an axis
