Vocabulary List for Touch Tank Program from Ocean Adventure!

(This program is used for many age groups. Pick out age-appropriate terms)

tube feet - locomotion system used by all echinoderms (spiny skinned animals like starfish) consisting of hundreds of water-filled tubes with suction cups on the ends.

tentacles - long, frilly appendages, often with sticky stuff on them, used for feeding

true crabs - animals with hard shells all over their whole body

other "crabs" (anomurans) - animals that look like crabs but do not have hard shells over their entire body (usually have soft tails) - this leads to some interesting life styles

fossils - impressions made by plants and animals in rocks. They lived a long time ago and when they died, they fell into some mud which, over time, became rock with a "picture" of the hard parts of the plant or animal

"living fossil" - a type of animal that is still around today that was around with the dinosaurs. Most animals from dinosaur times are extinct or really different now but a few have gone through all that time virtually unchanged
